Out of Province Inspections
Most vehicles needing registration that are coming from outside of Alberta must have an out of province inspection done on them. These inspections first require an inspection request form that can be purchased at the Registry and then taken to one of the Approved Inspection Locations in Alberta. To purchase this form you would need your photo ID and either your out of province registration or bill of sale.
There are some vehicles that may be exempt from this inspection as long as one of the following conditions are met:
1) If a vehicle is coming to Alberta from Manitoba, British Columbia, or Saskatchewan and:
- The vehicle is less than four years old
- Proof of SK/BC/MB registration in the name of the person requesting the exemption is provided
- The vehicle is present at the Registry for VIN validation
2) If the vehicle has been inspected within the last 90 days in either British Columbia or Saskatchewan and:
- Proof of SK/BC/MB registration in the name of the person requesting the exemption is provided
- Government issued inspection certificate issued in the last 90 days is presented
- The vehicle is present at the Registry for VIN validation
3) The vehicle is brand new and purchased within the last 90 days in a Canadian jurisdiction:
- Bill of sale must be in the name of the person requesting the exemption
- Vehicle must be present at the Registry for VIN validation
4) The vehicle is brand new and purchased in the United States:
- The bill of sale is no more than 90 days old and in the name of the person requesting the exemption
- Stamped vehicle import form and original Certificate of Origin must be provided
- The vehicle is present at the Registry for VIN validation
5) If the vehicle has a GVW over 11,794 kg the Out Of Province Vehicle Inspection is NOT required. However a Commercial Vehicle Inspection will be required in its place.
- The Commercial inspection can be no more than 14 days old
